Corals eat, breathe and shed waste through water movement, so flow is not optional — it's the difference between coral that thrives and coral that suffocates in its own detritus. A wavemaker (powerhead) provides most of it; your return pump only chips in. The goal is a random, turbulent flow pattern with no dead spots, not a fire hose pointed at one rock.

The ReefRig Turnover Bands

Total flow is sized as a multiple of your system volume (display + sump), tuned to coral type:

  • FOWLR / fish-only: 5–10×
  • Softies: 10–20×
  • LPS: 20–40×
  • Mixed reef: 25–40×
  • SPS: 40–60×

Two rules make that flow usable. First, the return pump carries only part of the budget — powerheads carry the bulk. Second, two opposed pumps beat one big one: facing them at each other creates a rolling gyre that reaches every corner, where a single large pump just blasts a jet.

RULE OF THUMB

A 75-gallon mixed reef (≈90 gal total system) wants 2,250–3,600 GPH of total flow. Split it across two opposed powerheads — two AI Nero 3s or two IceCap 2K Gyres — rather than one big pump, so you get a gyre pattern instead of a jet.

Flow is max GPH; every pump here is controllable and dials down from there. All prices verified July 2026.

Gyre (crossflow) pumps push a wide sheet of water and mount low; propeller pumps push a cone and suit corner placement. IceCap 2K price includes its WiFi dual-pump controller.

Propeller vs gyre

Propeller pumps (VorTech, AI Nero, Jebao SOW) push a cone of water and work well in opposed pairs in the corners. Gyre / crossflow pumps (IceCap, Maxspect) push a wide flat sheet along the length of the tank, which many mixed-reef keepers find gentler and easier to spread. Either works — match it to your aquascape and whether you want the motor in-tank (Nero, gyre) or externally mounted (VorTech).

Picks by tank

  • Nano (up to ~40 gal): Jebao SOW-3 ($55) with its included controller, or a single AI Nero 3 ($150) for app control and a cleaner build.
  • Mixed 75–90 gal: two AI Nero 3s ($150 each) or two IceCap 2K Gyres ($184.99 each) opposed. This is the value sweet spot.
  • SPS 90–120 gal: a pair of AI Nero 5s ($259.99) or VorTech MP40s ($431.99) to reach the 40–60× band.
  • Large SPS, 150 gal-plus: VorTech MP60 mQD ($809.99), often paired with an MP40.

2026 buying intel

Two things changed since older guides were written:

  • IceCap Gyre 3K is discontinued — CoralVue's page shows it as no longer available, replaced by the 4K Gyre (4,000 GPH). If a guide still recommends the 3K, it's out of date; buy the 2K or 4K instead.
  • VorTech's current generation is the QuietDrive (mQD) — the "mQD" naming means Mobius-ready QuietDrive, roughly 90% quieter and 40% higher output than the old EcoSmart line. There is no newer VorTech generation; mQD is current.

STAY CURRENT

The IceCap Gyre 3K is discontinued (superseded by the 4K), and VorTech's current line is the QuietDrive mQD — not a newer generation, just the Mobius-ready QuietDrive naming. Don't pay used-3K prices when the 2K/4K are current.

Bottom line

Set your total GPH from the Turnover Bands, split it across two opposed pumps, and pick propeller or gyre to suit your tank. Get your exact target flow from the flow calculator, then size your whole build — flow included — in the System Builder.
