Radion, Kessil and AquaIllumination (AI) are the three reef-lighting ecosystems most keepers choose between. All three can grow any coral from softies to SPS if you buy the right model and set PAR correctly — so the real decision is about spread, control ecosystem, aesthetics and price, not whether they "work."
The three ecosystems at a glance
- EcoTech Radion — spread-flat multi-LED panels (XR15, XR30) with the widest even coverage. Runs on the Mobius app.
- Kessil — dense single-point-source pucks (A360XE, A500X) that throw a shimmering, disco-ball light corals and eyes both like. Controlled by a WiFi dongle or the Spectral Controller X.
- AquaIllumination (AI) — the value-to-premium range (Prime, Hydra) with tight app control. Also runs on Mobius.
The Mobius overlap matters: because Radion and AI share the Mobius app, you can run a Radion light, an AI Nero powerhead and an EcoTech Vectra return pump from one app. Kessil keeps its own control world. That single fact decides a lot of builds.
RULE OF THUMB
Radion and AI both run on Mobius, so one app can control your light, powerheads and return pump together. Kessil uses its own control ecosystem. If you value one-app control of the whole tank, that points to Radion or AI.

| AI Prime 16HD | 59 W | 24×24 in | 100 (manufacturer) | $264.99 |
| Kessil A360X Tuna Blue | 90 W | 24×24 in | ~100 (community) | ~$449 (retiring) |
| AI Hydra 32HD | 95 W | 24×24 in | ~150 (community) | $413.99 |

| Radion XR30 G6 Pro | 215 W | ~32×32 in | not published | $999.99 |
Radion current generation is G6 (there is no G7). Kessil A360X is being replaced by the A360XE — buy the XE new. PAR is manufacturer-rated or community-measured where shown, otherwise size by coverage.
Control and aesthetics
- App control: Radion and AI both use Mobius, with deep scheduling, acclimation ramps and multi-device grouping. Kessil's app is simpler; many Kessil owners run them semi-manually with the analog Spectral Controller X.
- Look: Kessil's single point source gives the strongest shimmer and glitter lines. Radion's flat panel is the most even and shadow-free. AI sits between the two.
- Spread: Radion covers the widest even area per fixture; Kessil throws a tighter, more intense column that suits deep tanks and rimless cubes.
Picks by tank
- Nano / small mixed (up to ~20 gal): AI Prime 16HD ($264.99). Best value, Mobius control, manufacturer-rated 100 PAR at 24 inches.
- Mixed 24-inch tank: AI Hydra 32HD ($413.99) for output-per-dollar, or a Kessil A360XE for the point-source shimmer.
- SPS, standard depth: Radion XR15 G6 Pro ($529.99) or Hydra 64HD ($701.99).
- SPS, deep or wide: Radion XR30 G6 Pro ($999.99) — the highest-output single Radion — or a Kessil A500X ($849) over a 36-inch footprint.
BUYER ALERT · 2026
Radion's current generation is G6 — there is no G7, so don't wait for one. The Kessil A360X is being superseded by the A360XE; buy the XE new and leave the outgoing A360X to the used market.
Bottom line
Any of the three grows any coral. Choose AI for the best value and Mobius control, Radion for the flattest, widest, most even spread on SPS, and Kessil for the single-point-source shimmer and a simpler control world.
