SAMPLE BUILD · FIRST REEF TANK

The first reef tank: a complete 40-gallon AIO soft-coral build for about $2,600

THE BUILD IN ONE PARAGRAPH

This is a complete first-tank equipment list for a 40-gallon all-in-one soft-coral reef: the tank, one light, a wavemaker, a heater on an external controller, auto top-off, an RO/DI unit, a refractometer, a cycling test kit and salt — $2,602.34 in all, against a $2,600 budget. Every pick is chosen by ReefRig’s rule engine from spec and price data verified 2026-07-03, not by hand, so you can reproduce the whole list.

I’m planning my own first reef, and a 40-gallon all-in-one is the build I keep coming back to. An AIO keeps the filtration in the back of the tank — no sump, overflow or return pump to plumb — which is the shortest path to water for a first build. Everything else is sized by the rule engine: one light to cover the 35-inch length, a single wavemaker for the soft-coral flow band, and a heater wired through a separate controller so a mechanical thermostat can’t run away with the temperature. A soft-coral tank doesn’t need the tight alkalinity control a stony reef does, so the engine skips the protein skimmer and dosing — the list stays lean and lands at $2,602.34, just over a $2,600 budget.

Beyond the SKUs

These are not single products you add to a cart, but real costs the build needs — sized by rule from tank type, system volume and coral type. They are part of the total.

Why each part

Every line is chosen by the same rule engine that powers the System Builder. Below is the check each pick passed.

Display tank

Innovative Marine NUVO Fusion Pro 2 40L (Long) · $1,550.00

R6 A 40 gal all-in-one anchors the build — every other component is sized off the ~40 gal display volume you entered.

Temperature controller

Inkbird ITC-306A · $47.99

R4 R4 requires external heater control: this runs the heater on a switched, dual-probe alarmed outlet so a stuck thermostat can't cook the tank.

Lighting

AquaIllumination Prime 16HD Reef · $264.99

R2 Published PAR ~100 at 24″ lands inside the 50–150 band softie corals want. 1 fixture(s) cover the 35.4″ length at ~36″ effective spread each.

Wavemakers

AquaIllumination Nero 3 · $150.00

R3 softie wants 10–20× turnover (400–800 GPH). 1 pump(s) — 1× Nero 3 — deliver up to 2000 GPH combined, run throttled for random turbulence rather than a laminar jet.

Heating

Eheim Jager TruTemp 150W (3616) · $28.01

R4 34 gal needs 102–170 W of heat — a single 150 W element. It runs through the ITC-306A; a mechanical thermostat is the classic tank killer.

Auto top-off

XP Aqua Duetto 2 · $134.39

R6 Evaporation swings salinity on a reef; this dual-sensor ATO tops off automatically with 8.2 ft of lift and anti-overfill backup, sized for a ~40 gal system.

RO/DI system

Bulk Reef Supply 4 Stage Value 75GPD RO/DI System · $143.99

R6 Tap water poisons a reef with phosphate, chlorine and metals. This 4-stage 75 GPD unit makes your top-off and mixing water (for chloramine city water, step up to a 5/6-stage).

Salinity meter

generic Analog Salinity Refractometer (0-100 ppt / SG 1.000-1.070, ATC) · $25.00

R6 Salinity is the one parameter you must nail from day one — a refractometer (with ATC) beats a swing-arm hydrometer for the ±0.001 SG accuracy corals need.

Cycling test kit

API Saltwater Master Test Kit · $35.98

R7 Through the nitrogen cycle you're watching ammonia and nitrite fall to zero before adding livestock — this liquid kit covers ammonia/nitrite/nitrate/pH.

Salt mix

Instant Ocean Sea Salt · $71.99

R6 A reliable, economical salt is all a soft-coral or fish tank needs — one 160 gal box to mix your startup water; rebuy as a running cost.
